SIERRA RALLIES AT YANKEE STADIUM FOR "RESPECT"
8/16/09- Carlos Sierra joined with 4DSBxCoalition and other concerned residents to demand respect from the Yankees. Groups of residents marched around the stadium chanting for respect and condemning the Yankees for their broken promises.
Carlos Sierra has pledged that as a City Councilmember he will hold the Yankees accountable for broken promises. Sierra has said that he will ensure 25% of the jobs at Yankee Stadium go to Bronx residents as the Yankees promised. He has also condemned the Yankees for not replacing stolen parks with grass fields, not turf.
Sierra has stated he is "ready to lead" and has said that "as a Councilperson I will fight for every single resident, I will fight for what is right and for what is just. I will listen to my neighbors and deliver their message to City Hall and beyond, no matter what."
SIERRA FIGHTS AGAINST CUTS TO EDUCATION
June 4th - Bronx Democrat Carlos Sierra was at City Hall again on Thursday fighting to ensure that residents of the Bronx didn't suffer yet another cut to education. In attendance with Sierra were hundreds of other concerned parents, students, educators, and advocates.
Mayor Bloomberg's proposed budget would slash $400 million from education, resulting in increased class sizes and elimination of extra curricular activities and afterschool programs. As a candidate for City Council District 16 Sierra has made it clear that he opposes cuts to education.
"Mayor Bloomberg refuses to raise taxes on top earners in New York City, but he's quick to slash education for children who are often in underserved schools; He is simply out of touch." Sierra said.
The Mayors budget is currently being fought over and decision makers could pass it as early as the weekend. The emergency rally at City Hall was coordinated by Alliance for Quality Education. In attendance were representative from New Settlement Apartment's Parent Action Committee and the Coalition for Educational Justice. Sierra is a member of both.
Sierra said "The goals which we have are shared by all parents, we simply want to ensure that our children are given the opportunity for a better future, and we know the only way to do that is through quality education."
If sent to City Hall to represent the 16th District, Sierra has pledged to increase funding to City Students, particularly children in Bronx School District 9 where he says funds are most needed.
